Millions of pairs of tights and stockings get thrown away each year filling up the landfill sites and taking thousands of years to degrade. Recycling them is so easy and worn tights can be used for so many different things – we’ve compiled a list of our favourites, let us know if you can think of any more.
- Water Pipe Filter – If you collect water in a garden water butt you can fit some cut up old tights over the end of the down pipe to filter out any large bits of grit, dirt and leaves.
- Potpourri Holders – Cut off the toes of your tights and fill them with Potpourri tie the end with ribbon or string then place them in your drawers to keep them smelling wonderful.
- Paint Strainers – Use an old pair of tights to strain the lumps out of paint that has been standing around.
- Hanging Basket Liners – Cut the legs off your tights and use the seat to line your hanging baskets.
- Dog Toy – Twist 8 to 10 legs of tights around and tie them off at each end to make a raggy toy for your dog.
- Plant Bulb Holder – Fill the legs of your old tights with plant bulbs or onions to store them over the winter.
- Microphone Wind Shield – Bend a coat hanger into a round shape and stretch your old tights over the top. You can use this as a wind/pop shield for microphones.
- Plant Ties – Chop up your old tights into thin strips and use them for plant and vegetable ties – if you’re careful to untie them they can be used again and again.
- Rag Rugs – If you’re really clever you can cut up old tights and use them to make a rag rug.
- Grow Bag – Fill the legs of your tights full with compost and tie off the open end. Then cut small holes along the top and plant some vegetables or flowers.
- Stuffing – Scrunch or cut up your old tights and use them to stuff cuddly toys or pillows that have gone a little flat.
- Hair Tie Backs – Cut your tights up into short strips and use them as hair tie backs. use different coloured tights to make your tie backs more interesting.
- Draft Excluder – Fill one leg of tights with lots and lots of old tights, tie off the open end and place in front of your door as a draft excluder.
- Wrapping Paper Store – Keep all your birthday and Xmas wrapping paper safe by storing them in the leg of an old pair of tights.
- Cleaning your Fish Tank – Put stone and gravel from your fish tank and rinse it under the tap. Your gravel will shine and it won’t go down the plug hole!
Let us know if you have any other ideas on how to recycle old tights.
